The Skeptics
1966-1967
September, 1966: A group of junior high school students get together and form a band called The Skeptics. The lineup is: Dave Hoit on rhythm guitar and lead vocals; Phil Brigham on lead guitar and vocals; Larry Lenzmeier on keyboards; Craig Swanson on bass guitar and vocals; and Fane Opperman on drums. All members are fourteen years old and attend Capitol View Junior High in Little Canada.
September, 1966 – 1967: The group plays hit songs of the time, including covers by Chuck Berry, The Kingsmen, Ray Charles and Wilson Pickett. In addition, the band plays songs from British Invasion bands including The Beatles, The Kinks, The Animals and The Rolling Stones. The band performs at school parties, private parties and frat houses at the University of Minnesota. The band plays a Battle of the Bands at the Har Mar Mall, facing off against a rival band from their own school, The LTD’s.
June, 1967: The band plays at the Spicer Ballroom.
August, 1967: The band plays at the B-Sharp Booth at the Teen Fair area at the Minnesota State Fair. The Skeptics come to an end.
UPDATE:
1975: Phil, Fane and Craig play a Skeptics reunion concert at The Uptown Bar in Minneapolis.
In January, 2011, Craig Swanson reports that only one photo of The Skeptics is known to exist. The photo of the band was taken in 1966 by the mother of Fane Opperman, in the basement of the Opperman home, where the band practiced.
