History
Dick Tracy
1983 – 1991
July, 1983: John Richardson and Denny Johnson are working together on various musical projects at Sunrise Sound Recording Studio and decide to form a band with some of the musicians recording in the studio at the time. The original line-up is: Mike Holm on lead vocals; John Richardson on lead guitar and vocals; Jim Potter on keyboards; Denny Johnson on bass guitar and vocals; and Mark Fisher on drums. The group searches for a band name and Denny and John come up with Dick Tracy after consulting an issue of TV Guide.
August, 1983: The band plays a wide variety of Top-40 cover songs including songs by Huey Lewis, Night Ranger, Journey, Donnie Iris, Gamma, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Rainbow, Foreigner, Spirit, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Survivor, Loverboy and Bob Seger. The band books their own jobs, playing locally as well as some out of town jobs. Some of the venues include: The Uptown Bar in Minneapolis; T. Wrights in Brooklyn Center; The Maplewood Bar; the Regisrty Hotel in Bloomington; the Paradise Ballroom in Waconia, The Farmer’s Daughter in Litchfield; Loesches in Hastings and Jack’s Press Bar in St. Cloud. The band also plays at corporate parties.
May, 1984: Mike Holm leaves the band to run his father’s business and Chris Gilbertson takes over on lead vocals
July, 1984: Mark Fisher leaves the band and Marc Bulow takes over on drums and vocals.
September, 1984: Denny Johnson plays his last job with the band at The Lafayette Country Club in the Lake Minnetonka area and Jim Amundson takes over on bass guitar and vocals.
October 1985: Mark Bulow leaves the band and Brad Grapp takes over on drums. This version of the band lasts for two years.
July 1987: Chris Gilbertson leaves the band to join Oceanation and is replaced by Tom Baden on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
December 1989: Tom Baden leaves the band and is replaced by Mark Gallagher on lead vocals. Jim Potter leaves the group to join Kyx and is replaced by Chas Carlson on keyboards. Jim Amundson leaves to join The Randy Casey band and is replaced by John Peterson on bass and vocals.
June 1991: Due to career changes and personal issues, the band members go in different directions and Dick Tracy comes to an end after a successful nine year run.
