The Rugby’s

1963 – 1964

Fall, 1963: Four guys get together and form a new band, The Rugby’s.  The lineup is: Jim Wear Junior on lead guitar; Ted Coey on rhythm guitar; Wayne Hanson on bass guitar and lead vocals and Pete Huber on drums.  Ted, Wayne and Pete are all students at Benilde High School.

Pete Huber buys his first drum set (Slingerland), the cost is $350.

The band starts out doing all instrumentals, including cover songs by The Ventures, Dick Dale and the Deltones and Lonnie Mack.  Eventually, the band does cover songs of Top-10 vocal songs, including Chuck Berry.  Wayne takes over the lead vocals.

The band plays in basements and a warehouse and do not play any public performances.

Spring, 1964: The Rugby’s break up.
